High Cholesterol Treatment
Therapy for Patients
With High Cholesterol
For people
with high
cholesterol, there are several
therapies that can be done
include lifestyle therapy and drug therapy. Lifestyle therapy is a priorities therapeutic
before undergoing drug therapy. Lifestyle therapeutic is conducted by low cholesterol diet, exercise therapy and weight loss.
Low
Cholesterol Diet
The
purpose of this diet is to lower
total cholesterol,
LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and also increase HDL cholesterol levels.
The principle of low-cholesterol diet is to limit
cholesterol intake. In general, it can be said that primarily
people get cholesterol from animal
foods. Non-animal foods do not
contain cholesterol.
But it still should be careful when consuming
plant foods with high in fat contents
because it will still trigger blood
cholesterol levels to rise up especially cholesterol.
Dietary
Fat Intake
The diet
is not only restricting from cholesterol
intake but also reduce the consumption of fatty foods. Keep in mind that the human heart can produce its own cholesterol
from foods that contain
fat. Therefore the intake of
foods with high in cholesterol
or high fat can
raise cholesterol levels
in the blood.
Fat
contents in food are actually
still needed by the body for energy sources. Fat is then distributed throughout
the body by lipoproteins. Fat is
high in calories and required to dissolve a variety of vitamins
such A, D, E
and K. Fat
in the diet would be in the form of
triglycerides and cholesterol.
But remember, cholesterol is only found in animal
foods not in vegetables.
Based on the types of bond fatty acids, fatty is divided into saturated
fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids. Both types of fat (saturated fatty
acids and unsaturated fatty acids) found in animal or vegetable products.
However, saturated fatty acids tend to solidify at room temperature. Therefore,
saturated fatty acids are more atherogenic or easily attached to the blood
vessels that can cause blockages. In addition to solid form, while liquid fats
are oils.
Sources of saturated fats generally
come from animal fats such as meat (including sausages and beef corned),
milk (including yogurt,
cheese, and ice cream)
and eggs. Saturated fats can also be found from vegetable
fat such as coconut oil and
coconut milk. The liquid fat (oil)
is often solidified by hydrogenation to form trans
fats. That trans
fats are harmful to health. Fat is easily
solidified at room temperature so as to be atherogenic. One
example of the trans fat is margarine. Most
snacks containing trans fats are not
healthy for consumers. By
consuming saturated fatty acids
will lead to atherosclerosis and increase the risk of the emergence of heart diseases and blood vessel
diseases.
Eating the Good Fat For
Body
Fat is good if it can increase HDL
cholesterol levels and can suppress LDL cholesterol. Some examples of
unsaturated fatty acids that good for the body are omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9. The foods as sources of good
fats are nuts (walnut and hazelnut) and fish. Dark green vegetables are rich in
omega-6. The foods that contains omega-9 are olive oil, avocado and makademia nuts.
Increase Consumption
of Fiber Foods, Vegetables and Fruits
Fiber is a complex carbohydrate that is not digested by the body. Due to
can not be digested, fiber has many benefits such as providing a sense of
fullness and reduce food portions, preventing gastrointestinal disorders
(constipation, hemorrhoids, colon cancer), controlling blood sugar levels.
Sources of fiber are vegetables, fruits, nuts and complex carbohydrates
(oatmeal and brown rice).
Physical Therapy (Sports)
By doing physical activities are able to burn fat,
lower LDL cholesterol
and triglyceride, and raise HDL
cholesterol . Thus, it also lowering the risk of
heart disease. The definition of sports
is a physical activity which comprises
stretching stage, training stage and cooling stage.
One sort of good sports is aerobic
exercises because it involves movements and increases the body muscles.
